Returning to school in the age of social distancing requires teachers to find some innovative answers to a number of new questions. From practical things, like figuring out what a classroom that maintains appropriate distance and still fosters collaboration looks like, to deeper issues like mitigating the impact of learning loss and building confidence and resilience in a student population that’s been disengaged and dysregulated. At LEGO® Education we’re fortunate to have a community of passionate and innovative Master Educators who are helping us to answer those questions. Their feedback has been critical as we’ve developed resources to help schools and teachers navigate hybrid learning and the new landscape of education.9283864a5a4e7995c903e989ecabb010-huge-se

So, is there a secret formula for successful hybrid learning? The answer, like all of 2020, is complicated. What we know is that the best approaches blend engaging STEAM learning experiences that continue to develop 21st century skills while building confidence and a commitment to the social emotional learning (SEL) that fosters self-regulation, social awareness, and resilience. Fortunately for us, LEGO Education Master Educator, @Naomi is an expert on doing just that!

This is our time to reinvent education as we know it, to do something different, and I accept that challenge,” says Harm, the Founder and CEO of Innovative Educator Consulting and an NGSS and STEM specialist at Cave Creek Unified School District in Arizona. Naomi is an expert when it comes to best practices for implementing and integrating SEL into STEAM learning. Recently she was kind enough to take some time and chat with us about the critical importance of SEL, especially in the current circumstances. Her depth of knowledge was so fascinating and her enthusiasm so inspiring that it only seemed right that we ask her to share some of her learnings and ideas with our entire community. Naomi has put together a terrific video with her Top 5 strategies for integrating SEL into hybrid learning at the Elementary level that you can watch below. Down the road you can look forward to videos on Early Learning strategies and Middle School strategies as well!

Join the discussion on how your fellow educators are integrating SEL into their hybrid strategies and the critical need for developing social and emotional resilience in the current climate. Thanks Naomi Harm‍ for sharing these great ideas! I especially liked the scene building activity at the endfor exploring alternate narratives for stories! This is a fantastic way to inspire students to be creative, but also empowers them with opportunities to demonstrate application of SEL concepts to imagine new outcomes for the stories and characters! This of course canbe extended in classroom discussion for students to reflect on their own SEL goals and growth.
