Five Ways Educators And Schools Can Apply Learning Through Play To Enhance Social And Emotional Learning In The Classroom

We are living through an unprecedented period of uncertainty. Levels of adult stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness have increased. They have also risen among children. This is alarming. From the science of stress and mental health we know that if children are exposed to toxic levels of stress for prolonged periods during their early years, it can have damaging effects on learning, behaviour and health for their entire life.

Yet much of the current conversation in education revolves around “catching up” on formal learning in school during summer. Instead of focusing narrowly on academic learning, we need to integrate creative and playful experiences to address the social and emotional needs of our children. Doing so will not only enhance children’s well-being but also lead to improved learning in school and better long-term outcomes throughout their adult lives.
