Below are lesson progressions for Grades 1-5, with each grade level featuring over 50 elements sequencing LEGO® Education lesson content with SPIKE™ App tutorial content and activity prompts to scaffold students' design thinking, science, and computer science skills. Aligned to NGSS, Common Core, and CSTA standards, these lesson progressions are turnkey solutions your classes can use immediately, or you can layer them into your STEAM, science, or computer science instruction.

Grade 1 Lesson Progression
Grade 1 Lesson Progression

This series of 53 instructional activities introduces students modeling and design engineering, while sequencing when and how to introduce SPIKE™ Essential sensors and motors. Layered into instruction are opportunities to learn about light and sound waves, sequences and loops, data collection, and informational and narrative writing.

Learning Through Play continues with another 53 instructional activities that build upon (or introduce!) students to the color sensor and using sequences and loops with up to two smart bricks. Students will explore structures and properties of matter, animal habitats and biodiversity, and seed dispersal and pollination while building skills for computational thinking, and data collection and analysis, as well how to communicate their findings.

With 58 instructional activities, this sequence transitions students from icon to word blocks and encourages students to explore forces and motion, weather preparedness, ecosystems and group behavior, and habitats and adaptations; and supports students’ conceptual understanding of geometry, numbers and operations, and fractions.

The fourth grade progression provides 51 activities and multiple opportunities for students to use models to communicate their understanding of concepts like energy, speed, and collision; energy transfer and transformation; light refraction and vision; renewable and nonrenewable resources and more. Computational thinking and data analysis are featured, along with creative ideas about how students convey their findings; and students are tasked with modifying computer programs and exploring more sophisticated concepts of numeracy such as fractions and decimals.

The 58 instructional activities in this progression continue to build students’ understanding of computing systems and design engineering skills while exploring structures and properties of matter, balanced and unbalanced forces, solar systems and planets. Students will also explore patterns and relationships, and converting measurement and data into line and bar graphs. Computer science elements focus on introducing students to conditionals, impacts of computing, and cybersecurity.
